Top 10 Saddest Anime Series as Both Heartwarming and Heartbreaking

Bring out the tissues, buckets, or whatever it is you need to fight back your tears.

These sad series have elements so heartbreaking and tragic, we can't help but get sucked in. Let's take a look at the top 10 anime series that are known for bringing out the crybaby in all of us.

10. Plastic Memories

Yes, this anime is full of cute girls, but it's suprisingly sad. I mean, said cute girls are Giftia robots, and they only have lifespans of a few short years. Mortality and what it means to be human are themes of this show.

9. Elfen Lied

A species of mutants is held in captivity, but when one escapes to seek revenge on humans she is injured and undergoes a personality change.

The anime was sad but no where near as depressing as the manga.

8. 5 Centimeters Per Second

Told in three separate segments, this story follows two friends who were separated as children but who never lose touch.

This story is sad because it is so common. Viewers relate to losing contact with a close friend. We can’t help but pray for the two to reunite. The story is universal and sentimental.

7. Wolf Children

A human girl falls in love with a werewolf, and has two kids. Unfortunately, she ends up having to raise her children alone.

Aside from showing how deep a mother's love can go, this tearjerker is an emotional coming of age film, showing how the two half-wolf children change as they mature.

6. Grave of the Fireflies

The story forcuses on two siblings try to survive in the final months of World War II. It is really heart wrenching and you can't help but empathize with the characters.

The worst part of it is you know something bad is coming as you get towards the end, and the emotion just builds up without you even realising.

5. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

While this is an action anime, there's no doubt it's also one of the saddest shows of all time.

Their mom dies, their dad leaves, their teacher's baby dies, their best friend's parents died from the same person they saved from dying... Enough said.

4. Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day

AnoHana features broken characters whose past mistakes create an unbearable burden. The story centers around a group of friends in their teenage years.

The story in Anohana is too pure and emotional. After you watch this anime, just hearing the ending song will bring you to tears!

3. Angel Beats!

Set in a high school in the afterlife, Angel Beats! follows students as they learn to let go of attachments to their former lives.

It's just kind of sad when all of them dissapear one by one because they have fullfilled the regretness they have in their real life. And the anime really told us that life is worth living.

2. Your Lie in April

Words could never explain the emotional battle you have within yourself while watching this anime. The story is something beautiful as is the music. It is the expressiveness of Romantic Classical music in anime form!

1. Clannad / Clannad: After Story

One of the most acclaimed animes of the sad subgenre, Clannad follows a motherless boy whose father drinks and gambles. As the sequel to Clannad, Clannad: After Story follows the struggles and heartbreaks of a young married couple.

In particular though, the growing relationship between two very special characters really makes our hearts melt.
