Warner Bros. to Shake Up DC Films in Wake of Justice League

Following the disappointing critical and commercial reception to Justice League, Warner Bros. will reportedly again restructure oversight of DC Films.

Variety reports that veteran producer Jon Berg, who last year was appointed alongside DC Entertainment’s Geoff Johns to supervise the slate of films based on DC Comics properties, will step aside, and instead work as a production partner of Roy Lee (The LEGO Movie). Johns is expected to remain as DC’s chief creative officer, reporting to DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson. The website contends “his contributions to the films may evolve, and could be more advisory in nature.”

Berg and Johns were placed in charge of DC Films in 2016, following the disappointing performance of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Johns, is also closely involved with the comic book, television and consumer products aspects of DC, explained at the time that, “My job is to help other Warner Bros. divisions work with DC.”

A search is reportedly under way for Berg’s replacement. The reorganization is expected to take place by January, with Warner Bros. Picture Group President Toby Emmerich reportedly considering more fully integrating DC film operations into the larger studio.

As was previously reported, Berg spent the better part of a year on the set of director Zack Snyder’s Justice League to keep an eye on increasing production costs. Variety describes Berg and Johns as “intimately involved in the production.”

Although studio executives hoped the struggling DC Extended Universe could turn a page with Justice League, the $300 million film proved polarizing with critics and fans, and has earned just $572 million worldwide.
