Batman writer Tom King has responded to comments made about his script for Batman #53, which some claim prove Batman’s atheism.

Concluding the story arc “Cold Days,” the issue saw Bruce Wayne trying (and succeeding) to convince a jury of Batman’s fallibility to release a wrongfully arrested Mr. Freeze. It explored the faith that even Bruce Wayne has to put into the idea of Batman and what happens when that faith is shaken.

However, many fans and critics focused more on a specific part of Bruce’s argument, where he brought up his history of doubting in the concept of a god. During the almost issue-long monologue, he explains when he first lost his faith after the death of his parents. Some took it to mean that Batman was admitting to being an atheist and doesn’t believe in a god at all.

King disagrees with that interpretation, but he does leave it open to debate. Posting to Twitter, King wrote, “Lot of people saying Batman 53 (which I wrote) shows Batman is an atheist. That’s not how I read that comic. But I don’t think my reading of it is the most important one. Anyway, I hope you read the whole thing for yourself and decide for yourself.”

The run up to this point has explored the question of whether or not Bruce Wayne can ever really be happy if he’s also Batman, and part of that has probed the faith that other heroes, civilians and even villains put in him. So it’s interesting that King, instead of making a declarative statement on the subject, opens it up for more debate.
