Tom Taylor Writes Heartfelt Farewell to DC’s Injustice Comic

Six years after the digital debut of Injustice: Gods Among Us #1, DC’s Injustice 2 came to an end this week with the release of its 72nd issue, leading writer Tom Taylor to reflect on the series in a heartfelt Facebook post.

Fans of the video game know that the Injustice universe is a dark and violent place. After a terrible tragedy, Superman became the dictator of Earth, forcing Batman to lead the resistance. The series was full of shocking moments and brutal action sequences, but Taylor managed to pack the series with heart and humor.

On Facebook, Taylor noted that Superman remains his “favourite hero,” so writing him as a dictator was initially a “punch in the gut.” However, the writer said that “loving Superman, I think I knew how to hurt him.”

“Now, I’ve often heard it said that, traditionally, game tie-in comics aren’t incredibly well thought of,” Taylor wrote. “But Ed Boon, Shawn Kittelsen, Dominic Cianciolo and their team created a great game and, as far as I was concerned, I was being handed my own universe to play in, full of characters I worshiped like Green Arrow, Black Canary, Green Lantern, Batgirl, Nightwing, Harley Quinn and more. And I wasn’t going to waste my shot at the characters I loved, the characters I’d grown up with. I was going to tell the best story I could.”

Injustice 2 may be over, but Taylor teased the possibility of more Injustice digital comics: “Who knows? We may be back one day…”

Injustice 2 #72, by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo, is available now from DC.
