Doctor Spektor: Master of the Occult #1
“Doctor Spektor: Master of the Occult” #1 by Mark Waid and Neil Edwards is the first time I’ve purchased or even read a story with this character in it, but given its pedigree in Dynamite’s Gold Key lineup and Mark Waid’s position in the writer’s chair, it couldn’t be all bad, right? Centered on a John Constantine/John Walsh/Jack Ryder/Ryan Seacrest amalgamation featured on his own reality show, “Doctor Spektor: Bring ‘Em Back Undead,” this comic keeps the cast small for the reader as Waid and company introduce the character and cast. Spektor himself never strays from the center of Waid’s plot, giving readers a fair introduction to the character. Waid doesn’t dive too deep into Spektor’s personality in this first issue, choosing to leave mystery and celebrity as a buffer, at least for now. Waid does introduce readers to Abby Horne, Spektor’s personal assistant and Lenny, Spektor’s manager. In addition to his own celebrity, Spektor is obsessed with a vision only he can see, but canno

The Occultist #1
Every once in a while, a major publisher like Dark Horse will put out a book like this, that completely ignores the last forty years of comics history. Writer Tim Seeley seems to have pulled everything in “The Occultist” straight out of the Stan Lee playbook: mild-mannered college student with a secret, does-she-doesn’t-she love interest, mentor/father figure who’s secretly evil. Heck, there’s even a character who looks like Stan Lee. The difference between this and, say, “The Amazing Spider-Man” is that back in 1963 all this young-man drama was groundbreaking. Now this ground has been tread, retread and trampled so many times that it just holds no interest anymore. Comics have moved on. Yet books like “The Occultist” still get published, so let’s put away cynicism for a moment and try to take it on its own terms. It’s not particularly edgy, but there is a bit of dark magic going on: there’s a cool idea about reading the “entrails” of a cell phone like a living thing once you spill

The Occultist #1
“The Occultist” is a one-shot from Dark Horse, even though it ends on a very big ‘to be continued’ moment. It appears that if this issue is successful, there is a great opportunity for more tales to be told for this character by this creative team. But for now, we get a tease and a complete origin. I can only hope plenty of people get on board, because this issue is a lot of fun. It feels like a Top Cow Pilot Season book, only better. Seeley writes this in his wheelhouse so as to contain devilish action and humorous dialogue. Rob Bailey is a quiet college student. He’s the sort of everyman Stan Lee would spend nights dreaming up. He keeps to himself, works in an old book store for little money, is far too nice, has a domineering religious mother, and has just been dumped by his girlfriend of a few years. Life was never great, but it was liveable; Now, even that’s debatable. The charm of this comic is that it doesn’t force these plot points down your throat, it’s subtle in moments, th
