IDW’s Next Goosebumps Arc Warns Readers ‘Download and Die!’

Goosebumps will return to IDW Publishing for a new comic book arc in February 2018, and this time, it’s bringing a true killer app.

Goosebumps: Download and Die! is the title of the second three-issue arc in the Goosebumps comic book series, inspired by one of the most famous novels in R.L. Stine’s children’s horror books, 1992’s “Say Cheese and Die!” While that book featured a camera that predicted doom for the subjects of its photos, Download and Die! is a “spiritual successor” centered on a “smartphone app that snaps filtered pictures which depict nightmarish outcomes.”

Download and Die! is written by Jen Vaughn (Cartozia Tales, artist on Adventure Time) and illustrated by Michelle Wong (Tomboy).

“Goosebumps are a big part of my literary past and now present; R.L Stine really knew how to get under your skin so you’d even be afraid a paper cut on a page of the latest novel would somehow pay a debt to a demon,” Vaughn said in a statement to CBR. “This Goosebumps tale is going to delve into what makes friends tick and what can drive them apart. What’s that saying, ‘You can always make new friends?’ Well, not when people find out what you did to your last ones.”

“As a kid, I spent ages staring at those Goosebumps cover illustrations with equal parts delight and horrified fascination,” Wong said. “There’s definitely a bit of an ‘origins story’ for me there, so working on this series has got my inner 8-year-old clapping with glee.”

Both creators also expressed enthusiasm for working with each other for the first time — along with a warning to expect some legitimate scares from the story.

“Michelle’s work on taking over Tomboy (written and originally drawn by Mia Goodwin) blew me away,” Vaughn said. “She’s got a knack for capturing the shattered innocence of children, mayhem and mischief, that will haunt you long after you’ve finished our Goosebumps tale. Michelle brought my characters to life so well… too well. They laugh, they cry, they dreams and bleed through the power of her lines. I’m terrified to read the comic now.”

“Creepy stories are my favorite, and Jen is making this one so much fun to work with,” Wong said. “I love drawing cute characters, and I love drawing monsters — it’s a dream come true.”

IDW’s first Goosebumps series, Goosebumps: Monsters at Midnight by writer Jeremy Lambert and artist Chris Fenoglio, is scheduled to debut on Oct. 25 — conveniently landing less than a week before Halloween. That series is slated to run for three issues, and wrap in December; suggesting Goosebumps will take a break in January before returning in February with Download and Die!.
