New adaptation to adapt epilogue story for 1st time

Netflix revealed the first key visual on Monday for Netflix's live-action series adaptation of Kei Sanbe's Erased (Boku dake ga Inai Machi) manga. The series will premiere in Japan on December 15, and is slated to debut in 190 countries this winter.

The new series will adapt the manga's epilogue story for the first time.

Ten Shimoyama (live-action SHINOBI - Heart Under Blade) is directing the series, with scripts by Tomomi Ōkubo. The Kansai TV/Cocoon production is filming in 4K resolution in Hokkaido's Tomakomai City, the real-life locale depicted in the original manga. Furukawa happens to be 29 years old in real life, just like the adult Satoru Fujinuma.

The original manga's story follows Satoru Fujinuma, a 29-year old struggling manga artist who possesses a strange power: a largely uncontrolled ability to turn back time before a life-threatening accident occurs around him. When his mother notices a serial kidnapper in action, and is later murdered for it, Satoru unwillingly turns back time to arrive 18 years in the past in his elementary school days, some time before an incident that has haunted him his whole life: the disappearance and murder of his classmate Kayo Hinazuki.

Sanbe began the original manga in Kadokawa's Young Ace magazine in 2012, and ended it in March 2016. Sanbe launched a spinoff manga titled Boku dake ga Inai Machi Re in Young Ace in June 2016, and ended it in November 2016. Kadokawa released the compiled book volume of the spinoff manga as the manga's ninth and final volume on February 4.

The manga was nominated for the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize 'Reader Award' in 2014 and the Manga Taisho Awards in 2015. Yen Press is publishing the manga in North America, and will release the third omnibus volume on November 7.

An anime adaptation of the manga titled ERASED in English premiered in January 2016. Aniplex of America licensed the series, and Crunchyroll, Daisuki, and Funimation streamed the series as it aired in Japan. Hulu is streaming the show with an English dub.

The manga also inspired a live-action film that opened in Japan in March 2016.
