Green Lanterns’ Final Issue Pits Hal Jordan vs Cyborg Superman… Over Coast City

25 years after its initial destruction, Coast City’s fate is once again at the mercy of Cyborg Superman.

In the final issue of Green Lanterns this October, Hal Jordan battles Hank Henshaw for the fate of his hometown. It’s a rematch that is a long time coming and not only closes out the DC Rebirth series but serves as a coda for writer Dan Jurgens with both characters and the fictional city.

In 1993’s Superman #80 (Vol. 2) also written and illustrated by Jurgens, Henshaw — who was masquerading as a resurrected Superman with cybernetic parts — revealed his villainous intentions by destroying Coast City with the help of the alien warlord Mongul. The duo were ultimately defeated by the true Superman along with Jordan, Supergirl, Steel, and Superboy but the damage had been done: The sudden loss of his hometown along with virtually everyone he ever knew made Jordan susceptible to Parallax who possessed the Green Lantern for its own sinister ends.

While Coast City was eventually rebuilt during the events of Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver’s Green Lantern: Rebirth, this marks the first time Cyborg Superman as returned to the city that he once wiped off the map. With the reborn city as their battleground, Hal Jordan and Hank Henshaw’s grudge match is about to get even more personal.
