Whether you love or hate the film, there’s no denying “Suicide Squad” is currently enjoying its highest profile ever. Rob Williams, Jim Lee, Scott Williams and Jason Fabok continue to align their “Suicide Squad” comic with its cinematic counterpart in issue #1, which shares the same lineup of characters with the movie. While the book is still primarily in setup mode, the creative team’s personality definitely shines through. Originally announced as a title from Vertigo in 2013, Peter Milligan and Leandro Fernandez’s “The Discipline” #1 arrived this week from Image Comics with a new lease on life. While there’s a lot of promise in this first chapter, this story of a protagonist’s slow awakening to a new hidden world feels very by-the-books. When “The Discipline” #1 kicks off, our protagonist Melissa is doing well financially, but that’s about the only positive in her life. Her husband ignores her, her family rejects her attempts to help and her life is generally unfulfilling. Then she meets Orlando in an art gallery, and her world turns upside down as she starts to learn about a shadowy organization known only as the Discipline. While Melissa thinks she knows what’s going on, some strange twists and turns still lie ahead. “The Discipline” #1 opens with a three-page sequence set a bit later in this initial story arc’s timeline, which Milligan uses to show us that this isn’t a completely standard story abo

Meredith Gran’s “Adventure Time” mini-series comes to a nice close in “Adventure Time: Marceline and the Scream Queens” #6 along with a standalone short about the band by Rich Tammaso. Gran’s art is deliciously on model throughout this issue, with every character feeling perfectly executed, which really nicely anchors the story in the “Adventure Time” world. The push and pull of Marceline and Princess’s friendship, and the pressure Marceline has been under as she becomes a big star has all worked very well throughout this series. The stakes raise considerably in this final issue. As things come to a head, fully manifesting when Princess leaves and Marceline physically transforms into a monster, overwhelmed by anxiety. It takes Princess returning and talking her friend down (in a bit of reverse psychology) to bring everything around and get to that happy “Adventure Time” ending that’s expected. Great lines like “She won’t listen to kindness!” and “You and I have creative differences!

The “Adventure Time” ongoing series from Boom! Studios is by far one of the best all-ages comics being published (between it and “Snarked” they’re rapidly cornering that market), so I had high hopes for Meredith Gran’s spin-off mini-series “Adventure Time: Marceline and the Scream Queens.” Two issues in, though, it’s settled down into an absolutely average comic. That’s not to say it’s bad, of course. Four months ago, I picked up the first issue of this series, read it, and was disappointed. I gave it a star and a half. In the time since, I’ve picked up each issue and looked through them, only to find that nothing really appealed enough to me for me to commit the cash to challenge disappointment again. With the release of the tenth issue, combined with the facts that this series is collateral support to the video game and potential fodder for ideas behind the September relaunch (after all, Geoff Johns helped with the plot of the game and Jim Lee helped with many of the character designs) I figured I’d check in again.
